Free wifi in airports?

I find that free wifi in airports is way too rare. Worse yet are the airports that have no wifi at all. But, Rex Hammock is keeping a list. Kudos to Tampa Bay!

Oakland airport should be added to that list. Used to charge $6/day via T-Mobile, but now it’s free! :)

Wish other Bay Area airports were similarly thoughtful.

But anyway, I tell you… even though I live in SF (and just 10 minutes driving from SFO), that Oakland airport looks better and better nowadays; not only due to the now-free WiFi, but also fewer cancelled/delayed incoming and outgoing flights due to fog!

Adam: really? I’m in Oakland all the time. That’s GREAT news. Is it available airport wide, or just in certain sections?

2 weeks ago Oakland was not free…Orlando is also free, as is Las Vegas (though may be just the S/w terminal).

I used a roaming connection in Paris a couple of months ago for 30 minutes and was socked for over $ 100…

There’s an opportunity for a carrier to offer a $ 1-2 an hour kind of service and rake it in…most of us do not need more than that at an airport and we would not think twice at that price point…

I was flying out of Oakland in mid-November via Southwest, and I’m pretty sure wifi was free then! But I can’t see any mention of free wifi on the Oakland Airport page, so maybe I was imagining things. Bummer!

[In Seattle, they (via Cingular) wanted $9! Sure, it was for a 24 hour period, but as Vinnie said, how many folks really need more than an hour or so?!]

More free airport wi-fi than you think

Robert Scoble laments the lack of free wi-fi in airports, and points to this list of (mostly second-tier) airports with free wi-fi. Not to split hairs, but in my experience quite a few airports (and hotels and coffee shops) have…

So if San Fran is free then why not San Jose? I flew out of there in June and I was really pissed off that the airport of Silicon Valley was not free. Since I flew out of the Tampa airport I guess I was spoiled by the free wifi. Also Dallas/Fort Worth is horrible. the only true way to get flight information is by the internet and that means free wifi, yet there is none there. I always end up calling home to see when and where my connecting flight is, it is horrible.

All airports should have free wifi..it should would help the weary wired traveler. Just my opinion of course.

FWIW, I’m at Oakland Airport right now and the current wi-fi network is a SprintSpeed Network but they have many roaming partner logons so I am able to access it using my ATT DSL account.
